Nicolaus and Isobelle with children. Isobelle had three children by her first marrage to Henry Urquhart. Catherine (born June 30, 1873) and John Henry Urquhart born August 5, 1875 and Walter James September 11, 1878. Nicolaus and Isobelle produced four children. Dorothea, born February 6, 1883, Anna Bertha born July 12, 1884, Ludwig Andreas born October 4, 1884 and Otto Ernest born October 28, 1887.

Nicolaus moved to Waikiwi after his time in Stewart Island and began a store which led to him becoming a hawker, selling goods all over Southland from his horse and dray. He maintained this occupation for 16 years, after which he moved to the farm at Gorge Road.
